Many hours of struggle with the concepts of dimensional theory could have been avoided if my teachers had told me that calling a string one dimensional, and a piece of paper two dimensional, was only a matter of convenience, and depended on the perspective of the person using the piece of string or the piece of paper.
That book has already been written by Mandelbrot. However, I was tempted to share some of the historical developments of the uses of whole numbers and fractal dimensions with fractal beginners, since these experiences appear to have a certain usefulness in the teaching of applied science. Accordingly, I decided that perhaps I could write a book which was itself a randomwalk through fractal dimensions, hopping from one interesting application to another, hoping that the trail of exploration would introduce others to the fascination of fractal dimensions.
